“CUT PLANTS” to grow in your garden

A vase of fresh greenery cut straight from the garden can instantly make a house feel more like a home. Growing plants you can cut is easy and can save you money that you usually spend on flowers for the home. You don’t need to set aside a special area of your garden – simply plant the plants among your other plants, or grow them in containers outside the back door.

Here are 2 of my favourite cut plants that I grow in my garden:

PHILODENDRON – XANADU

Xanadu is an evergreen low shrub with a compact, tidy growth habit and attractive lobed leaves. It rarely exceeds 1x1m, and usually grows to around 75cm high. Plant this plant in semi shade and keep the soil moist at all times.

Stems in water will last +- 1 month

PORTULACARIA

Portulacaria, better known as Spekboom or the Elephant Plant is indigenous to South Africa. Their leaves are small, rounded, and succulent, held on red stems perfect to grow as a water wise shrub or even as a bonsai subject. Grow them in containers or in your garden. Water when the soil is dry to the touch.

When you put cuttings of the Spekboom in water the stems will root. Give new water every 2 weeks and these stems will last for months!
