Do you stand in front of your closet every morning and think, I have nothing to wear? If so, you’re not alone. Wardrobes can be a huge headache or a great source of joy. Simplifying by downsizing and organizing can turn our closets from frustrating to functional.
The change of seasons gives us the perfect opportunity to take stock of our closets. Take time to critically analyze each piece of clothing while switching your wardrobe.
How to create a more functional Wardrobe in 6 easy steps
STEP 1: Clean out your closet by setting up 4 staging areas
- KEEP – items you are planning on keeping in your closet
- GIVE AWAY – items you want to give to people you personally know.
- DONATE – items that can be donated to a local charity.
- TRASH – clothes that are damaged or in poor condition.
okay … I know there are some items you are not 100% sure about. Put them on your ‘MAYBE’ pile.
5. MAYBE – Clothes you might want to wear again.
STEP 2: Determine which clothes in the KEEP pile fit the oncoming season and which clothes should be put away for a different season.
STEP 3: Sort your clothes by Type for example Work vs Casual. Then sort by style, and colour- short sleeve vs long sleeve, black, white, colour etc.
STEP 4: Go through the maybe pile again. Try on these clothes and decide if they belong to the KEEP, DONATE OR GIVE AWAY Piles.
STEP 5: Take inventory and make a list of items you need to shop for. Buy quality basics that you can wear year-round.
STEP 6: Process the GIVE DONATE AND TRASH piles and do what needs to get done.
